Today was about wandering the streets of Cusco (Cuzco). I have seen it spelt both ways. It is breathtaking (pun intended at 3600m above sea level). It really is a living postcard. A 3D one, with with magestic views, colourful people, honking horns, the smell of sizzling street food, and the occasional surprise of a guinea pig giving you the side-eye, well… before it became dinner.

The markets are hectic, a full sensory workout. Stalls overflow with fruit in colours I didn’t know existed bright pink dragon fruit, tiny golden bananas, so many different corns, breads, it just goes on. Between the fruit are rows of handmade goods: woven textiles, alpaca scarves, and hats that somehow make everyone look like a seasoned explorer.

King Ricky was one of the most colourful characters that we saw. He drew my attention immidiatly, as he was actually making his product right there on the street, tools, plyers, wire everything on hand. Most other people are simply selling products and I do wonder if they have made them at all. Ricky was very interested in the bracelets that I have made myself thanks Michael and Ciska). Good on ya King Ricky, I am very happy with what you have made me. He adjusted it to my size on the spot. Gracias Ricky!
And then, yes… there it is. Guinea pig. Prepared and ready for cooking. Known locally as cuy, it’s a staple here. Not tonight, but one night I will try it.
Towering above the street is an impressive Pachacútec Monument. Standing tall and proud, it honours the great Inca ruler who basically put Cusco on the map.

Every turn in Cusco feels like a new discovery. It’s chaotic, colourful, and completely unforgettable.
Wow – Is that a really hairy dog or a mutant Guanaco ?
Ummm….. Do you mean the hairless dog?
It is native to Peru I have been told. 🙂
